To stay on Medicaid, Arkansas is requiring ppl to log 80 working hours per month, ONLINE. Even tho low-income & older people have some of lowest internet adoption rates in the US #digitaldivide citylab.com/equity/2018/08…
In the 1st month of the new system, 26% of the state's Medicaid recipients failed to successfully report.

Just like patronizing work requirements, politicians are exploiting the #DigitalDivide to make benefits less accessible for poor folks & elders.
This may be my favorite: "The website only accepts reports between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m." Why? The internet is 24/7 -- for those who can access & afford it. Why make the system online-only and not take advantage of that? #DigitalDivide
Internet access is a necessity -- an expensive necessity largely controlled by a duopoly industry that has no intention of serving our needs. We need to bridge the #DigitalDivide, not allow politicians to use it to reinforce economic, racial & generational divides.
Thought I was done but I'm not. Right now the @FCC is trying to gut Lifeline, a program that actually makes internet access more affordable for low-income folks (incl. ppl on Medicaid). Tell the FCC to knock it off & help @freepress to #SaveLifeline here: savelifeline.org

People ask my why I work so hard. Motivation is key.

My wife and I lived with rats in the walls and ceiling, with fleas in our bed biting us at night. We went a week with no food except bagels the local gas station threw away.

When you’ve been that poor, you WANT to work hard.
I once went 10 days without food and 3 days without water because I couldn’t afford the treatment for an infected abscess in my throat. The pus would have poisoned me if it had burst and I’d swallowed it. I lost 20 pounds in that time and looked like a scarecrow.
We lived in low-income housing where people waited for us to go to work so they could try to kick in our door. Other men would see me leave and stand at the door telling my wife to open it for them. I had to go tell their families I’d kill them if they didn’t stop. They stopped.

Michigan is shamelessly attempting to design Medicaid work requirements to disproportionately burden Black beneficiaries. Whether or not this policy is ultimately implemented, please know that it points to larger patterns in the experiences of Black Medicaid beneficiaries.
A Black woman I interviewed in Michigan 5 yrs ago: “if you’re white & you have Medicaid…you are looked upon with more sympathy...it's ‘she’s going through a hard time right now'…If it’s us…then we’re looking for a hand out…& we are treated as such”
Black #Medicaid beneficiaries know exactly what the deal is b/c their experiences inform them. Policies like we are seeing in MI right now fit into a larger set of processes that ultimately undermine equality & democratic citizenship, especially 4 Black folk #FragmentedDemocracy

Hours of my work day and my very limited energy have been spent fighting with my health insurance company about my coverage.

The sicker you are, the more expensive your plan.And there's no option because the #GOP allowed health insurance companies (who just got a huge tax cut) to charge whatever they want for coverage.
