Something just happened that was disturbing and snapped me from beach fantasy to harsh reality.

While at lunch, 2 white men in their 50s/60s, sitting at the table behind me, were talking about wanting to get their picture with the young, attractive female bartender. (1/5)
One of the two men went up to her and asked her, and she turned him down. The men proceeded to talk about her turning him down for the next 15 minutes. One man said, “At least she was classy about it. If she would have just said no, I would have been pissed.” (2/5)
I turned around and asked if I heard them right. They proceeded to explain to me that there is a difference between being classy, & just saying no and walking away. And yes, they would have been pissed if she said no.

One man followed up w/ “I understand what no means.” (3/5)
I don’t think he does understand what no means. They felt entitled to having access to this woman even if she felt otherwise. (4/5)
I hope this helps provide context to why women have to tactically navigate our interactions w/ men.

We never know when a simple polite rejection or expression of our own preferences will lead to hostility or retaliation. (5/5)
