I some times use the term "dislocated" to describe teams that are not mostly together in the same space. (I think I first hear it from @gdinwiddie).
some people dislike the term, because to them, it implies different status, or that success isn't possible if a team isn't in the same space.
and that is one reason I (sometimes) use the term. becuz it /is/ jarring. it calls attention to a dynamic that can easily amplify status differences and lead to lack of success if it isn't ACTIVELY managed.
It is possible to achieve what @dhh described:
but that is not the default, & doesn't happen without A LOT OF ATTENTION to making it happen.
it doesn't happen without robust tools, & attention to both how work flows and how ppl communicate and relate to each other.
it doesn't happen when manages assume they have to "stay on top of" ppl they can't see and install various tracking mechanisms to make sure ppl are in their chairs, tapping their keyboards.
benign terms--virtual team, distributed team--mask the default dynamics and hide the work needed to help teams that aren't together thrive.
