the art world is too stressful, exclusive, uncreative and harmful across the board and I don’t wanna inherit its shit. Rip it up n start again. We should be deciding how this goes - we’re able 2 be political in a way other industries aren’t. Let’s get 2 it 🚫
I’m 24 and I’m tired. What does it say about the people in power that they’re okay working like this ☹️
Every art scene has the same problems
Underrepresented artists remain pushed out of mainstream platforms, can’t exhibit anywhere so can’t develop their practice and aren’t able to build up a CV to get funding.
Galleries are shit at making any effort towards engagement so the audience stays the same group of people n everyone else is scared to join in/walk thru the doors
There’s no way to complain about how these systems operate because no scene ever allows for art criticism, only arts journalism
And the same people stay in power year after year, or do musical chairs and just take over another city. no space is made, nothing changes
The arts aren’t business-minded enough to find reliable income so we all depend on funding applications and just hope n pray we can live off that, which just causes anxiety so we’re all little stressheads
Galleries and studio complexes hardly ever own their building so can be moved on and on and that just causes even more stress and precariousness and contributes to gentrification imo
In and amongst this all, you have a lot of white mediocrity producing bad and pointless art
If you aren’t in London, arts workers are expected to be nimble enough to travel across the country to do tiny bits of paid work bc there’s never a good local art economy to feed us all
Big organisations with giant budgets programme more than they can afford to do well, instead of a few good quality things with staff being paid properly
We’re all expected to be healthy and massively social 100% of the time in order to network our way into ‘the scene’ so we can get opportunities just from social clout alone
And off the back of that, you can’t be critical or annoyed with someone or show your hurt because then u are difficult to work with 🙄
The arts never have a good HR department or even think to take care of staff and volunteers, who are often working with the public and that can be a headfuck
And u all know nothing i’m saying is a surprise. Why is even worse. We are humans able to say and do things, we cannot let this continue to go on like it is. Do your bit
if ur identity allows you to safely criticise these problems or institute new policy or have conversations that really change things, you HAVV to do it because a lot of ppl don’t have the same privilege and how else will this get better
