thinking about crypt of the necrodancer again because i think it's the coolest game idea in history
all that many of us ever really wanted out of games was to do a fight where we look cool and powerful while perfectly synced to a rad soundtrack and nothing else has ever attempted that so crypt wins by default. it's also very good
lots of games have great music but none of them try to make sure your hits land on the beats and that's why no game has ever gotten five stars from every reviewer
also i'm not sure if this was intentional but ime the game rewards your progress with better music. first level is okay, the second one is pretty good, but at least for me getting through even the first one was hard as fuck. it was fun, but that was the whole game to me for hours
so then when i got to level 3 i was already ecstatic because I Did It, and then i realized what song it was - the title screen track! the one that i heard that instantly told me i wanted to play this game!
it sneaks up on you because the intro isn't the same and doesn't reveal how much of a jam the song is going to be, and then suddenly it's happening and you're *completely* in the groove going fuck yeah, that's me, i'm the pissed off girl from the game box
also while the shopkeeper seems like just a funny bit they put in, i really think it enhances the experience to be partway through a dungeon, completely in the zone, and have that extra epic vocal line come in. i just think it's neat
i bristle at having to use the word epic but it's literally the correct word
