Two years ago, I got angry one night in mid December, and went for a drive. I stopped for gas and a young man who I had driven by earlier walked by wearing jeans and a hoodie. It was 20 degrees, but with the wind, felt like 10.

Against my better judgement, I offered him a ride:

He got in my Jeep. His fingers were bright red.
We started to chat. His mom was dead. He had lived with his girlfriend but they broke up. He couldn't afford their apt on his own income, and had ended up homeless, staying on couches. His GF had owned their car and when he couldn't always find a ride, he ended up losing his job.

We saw the father and we have seen the son. As military governor of the pre-partition Bauchi State, the father rode the storm that was the massive crisis in the vast Sayawa chiefdom in 1991(was as debilitating as the Zangon Kataf Crisis of 1992)

Two years ago, Lumberton was submerged for days after Hurricane Matthew slammed into North Carolina. A spot where a train track runs under I-95 left a gap in the surrounding levee, allowing water from the Lumber River to flood the city; entire area was navigable only by boat.
2. This year, volunteers raced to to plug the hole in the levee. The town reached out to the railroad company for permission to close up the levee but were denied. They got the governor to issue an order to protect the area. The city flooded nevertheless.
3. If this was a known weak spot in the levee system that resulted in the Lumberton flooding just two years earlier during Hurricane Matthew, why wasn't it plugged immediately after? (Apartment complexes and houses are still abandoned from two years ago).

The first thing I learned is that even though your policy might claim to cover you at ANY hospital in situations in which you're incapacitated and thus unable to commandeer an ambulance to drive yourself to an in-network hospital, that's not really how it works.
What emergency out-of-network coverage really means is that your insurer will pay ITS standard in-network reimbursement to the out-of-network hospital, which will bill your insurer at ITS exorbitant out-of-network rate. The difference will be yours to cover.
