@odtorson @NickCrosby Odd even w/o the situation we've now. First, FoM is popular but in UK, so why changing the principle 4 one member (especially if it already got dozens of exemptions). Second, it's one of the key principles everybody shares, giving in ruptures constitutional core of EU (& SM). /1
@odtorson @NickCrosby Third, do you really want such a disruptive member? I don't even think allowing to stay on current terms is a good idea. Fourth, why granting exceptions if UK doesn't even use the control mechanisms which come with FoM? /2

@pmdfoster Lots of commenters seems to ignore that this nonsense is sincerely believed by large parts of ERG and right wing Tories, Conservative grassroots & voters as well as Leavers & yellow press. Little hint: it would have been dismissed and she'd have faced rebellion much earlier. /2
@pmdfoster There was no way that she'd have gotten that far without endulging this nonsense, it's as easy and as depressing as that. The key stakeholders simply don't believe in power imbalance between EU & UK, potential negative consequences of Leaving or magnitude of divisions in UK. /3

A good thread by @pmdfoster and @paulrey99 but I believe both miss an important point. It's not just about "they don't want to make it work". It's possibly also that making it work would not be legitimate.
To explain that: The border question is about identity and ideology, something what Brexiters should know all to well.
Fact is, The solutions discussed, even if they work on a technical level at one point in the future, mean more visibility of a border. Not just in form of cameras but also in peoples' minds. The border will be perceived as more apparent. And this opens a can of worms.

Interesting comments about Lilico's display of ignorance. But let's be clear, if there is a border there won't be a deal and if there is unrest you will find that all those investors might be super careful to put their money in UK. Unrest & violence is also difficult to contain.
So I do wonder whether those slipper heroes are still so ignorant if violence spreads in there backyard. And what happens if EU decides to put pressure on UK's potential FTA partners to not engage but otherwise face problems with future dealing with EU.
I'm also fairly certain that a recession and social unrest in UK is not particularly attractive for trade negotiations or investors, apart from the fact that UK's resources will be bound by just managing those issues.

“Will we ever be able to defeat death?”

A question for which many people desire to find an answer beyond the usual ‘No’.

Let’s try and attempt this using concepts such as biological immortality, senescence, entropy and natural selection.
An explanation for death is that it is due to entropy (things wear out over time) and natural selection (we die so that future humans can live). But people and animals also die due to predators, homicide, disease and lack of food. What if we can overturn some of these factors?
Even w/o enemies, disease and lack of food, a human is susceptible to senescence or biological aging. In our 20s the regeneration of cells is outpaced by the death of cells, leading us to aging. But Calico and Buck Institute believe aging can be treated as a disease, and ‘cured’.

1/ The #Saudi kidnapping of #Khashoggi reminds me of the kidnapping of #Hariri. It is meant to embarrass the other party, this time the gov of #Turkey, and provoke a diplomatic crisis. This is drug Cartel methods. It has no other goal than to assert power over the other.

Air boxing by top #UK officials is amazing. Who punching at? Unlike in London, #Brexit never been much fight in Brussels, more lament. When some urged penalty in financial settlement, EU ignored & just tabbed up #'s. Citizen rights a 2-way street. Other stuff mainly logistical..
Point again is not to take any side, but merely point out Brussels has had consistent principles, goals & negotiating positions from the start. London still has no consensus on final objective. No one I know in #EU has advocated for "no deal" but some in #UK actually do that...
Have had many many long conversations w/ top London colleagues. Am very conscious of all arguments & concerns on #UK side, incl over Northern Ireland. But even in no deal scenario, #UK will end up facing exact same choice on future relationship w/ EU as now, but w/o transition...

My company was raided. It should have been a straightforward matter. But the #MetPolice & #LBRUT forgot to seize my computer & came back to do a 2nd raid. The search warrant didn't permit a second entry, however, #LBRUT entered unlawfully

Complaints were then made to my MP #VinceCable. He liaised with the #Metpolice & #LBRUT. And then weeks later, the search warrant was completely changed & was passed off as the search warrant executed on the day of the raids.
