The @PremiumTimesng revelation on #AdebayoShittu is another commendable work done by the outfit. But, I am afraid, it leaves many questions unanswered. The @NGRPresident of Nigeria ought to be worried. It is one scandal too many for his administration.
The most scary part of all these lapses in the Security Clearances issued by the DSS is that it calls to question the credibility and quality of all advice, warnings & reports ever forwarded to President @MBuhari by the agency.
The most important question right now is, what does the DSS do whenever it is required to vet individuals proposed for public offices? Is the work so routine as to ask questions & take the responses offered as fact? Do they go into the field to mine truth out of info gathered?
The President nominates, have DSS vets & forward list to NASS for confirmation. NASS screens & probably also request for Security Report on each nominees. Key decisions taken by all arms of Govt are often hinged on DSS Reports. Finding that the reports aren't thorough is scary.
There is also a chance that the reports were thorough & the facts were known. But, somehow, the candidates still get a clean bill during screening by NASS. What could have happened? Could someone have requested or ensured that the damaging facts be taken out of view?
Is the DSS compromised? Whichever be the case, there is cause for us as citizens to be alarmed. There is nothing hysterical in concluding that these kind of criminal incompetence & or conspiracy could have enabled & prolonged the Boko Haram insurgency & killer herdsmen conflict.
Lastly, could someone help us with the details of the 1979 constitution as it borders on electoral eligibility? Was Shittu legally qualified to stand for election while he was below 30years old? @Naijavote @naijama @ChidiOdinkalu
It seems to me that a question as routine as where a candidate served for NYSC would be standard during security screening. Could the DSS have left that out or were they in acquiescence with Shittu's view that a Legislative responsibility nullifies the NYSC obligation?
Are citizens, within statutory bounds to observe the NYSC but who are yet to, still legally qualified to stand for election into public office? Was the NYSC act ever passed into law by the National Assembly at any point in time? Would that have been necessary?
Shittu's assertion that he deliberately refused to observe the NYSC seems to make his case peculiar. It sounded like @AsoRock or DSS might be aware of it. Or maybe he was just bluffing. Are Public Servants given such waiver? Please @DrJoeAbah, help intervene on this.
By all means, the next @NGRSenate has its work cut out for it. We need to fix loopholes in our laws. We need a genuine people's Constitution. Our democracy still runs on legal contraptions of the military establishment. And for @adebayoshittuHM, you should have been gone already.
