Given the Tesla pump pieces from Bloomberg (BB), Reuters, etc. today wrt Pana, I thought I may do a thread describing how things are reported in Japnanese lang. press. A lot can be lost in translation, so I thought something from those fluent in JPN & ENG may be helpful.
2/x
Here is some background on media landscape in JPN, followed by Tesla coverage in JPN.

Print press is still alive & relatively well in JPN. There are 3 major dailies (Asahi, Mainich, Yomiuri) & 2 major business dailies (Nikkei & Sankei).
3/x
Asahi & Yomiuri are the largest dailies in the world by circulation & all but Sankei are larger than WSJ or NYT. Chu-nichi may be of some interest, as it is based in Nagoya & covers Toyota & Mitsu extensively. Although a regional paper, Chunichi is also > WSJ or NYT.
4/x
Many other weeklies, web-only sites, indutrial papers, etc. I'll talk about Nikkan-kogyo (& its affiliate) as it 1) writes about Tesla, & 2) was referred to in Eng-lang news. It is a relatively large industrial paper (1/2 mil), mostly read by mgmnt of industrial companies.
5/x
TVs tend to be as shallow as in NA, so I'm ignoring them.
6/x
Finally, although many Tesla fans consider them just a supplier, Pana is a large & important company in JPN. I may do another thread on Pana eventually, but not this time. Another company to keep an eye on is Sumitomo Material, which supplies raw material for batt. to Pana.
7/x
First, I looked at Nikkei, Asaki & Nikkan for recent articles. Nikkei is essentially the official paper of Japan Inc. Asahi leans left, so the furthest from fin/industrial world among major papers. Nikkan is industrial, and has more on Tesla than other sources.
8/x
Nikkei has published tons (~400) in the last 3 month. Vast majority are about $TSLA and "going private". Other than that, 20~30 specific to Tesla.
9/x
Search for Tesla & Pana comes up w/ about 40 articles, of which ~15 are about how Tesla is affecting Pana stock price (i.e. Tesla is being blamed for Pana stock going down). One on Pana moving away from Tesla at GF2 on PV venture.
10/x

Two are rather telling:

Today: "Dirk cloud over Pana's Tesla-dependent growth"
8/28: "Risk of automotive-dependence"

I suspect today's piece is Pana's response to pump pieces in BB/Reuters. It may come to Nikkei Asian Review soon.
11/x
On Asahi:
97 articles mentions Tesla in the last year. 16 article on Tesla + Pana, of which 3 on "going private", one on prod. delay, 1 on china factory. Rest are not specific to Tesla.

Very little attention to Tesla here.
12/x
Nikkan: in "transportation" section. Of ~300 articles, 9 articles on Tesla in the last month, 6 of which are from Bloomberg. 1 from Jiji (JPN wire service).
13/x
Of the remaining 2 original article, one is on exec. dept, and the other is on GM charging system w/ Tesla mentioned as comparison. Basically, only syndicated articles, mostly from BB.

Nikkan also has many articles on Pana in the same time period, but none related to Tesla.
14/x
Even in JPN, not everyone reads papers. What do most people see online? I searched "Tesla" & "Panasonic" on Google News, and looked at first 20 items from the last several months. I've looked at the headlines & whatever content available (i.e. not behind a paywall).
15/x
I'm excluding those on SpaceX, or those mentions Tesla in passing (e.g. articles on Nissan). Minor sources are designated as Web. Here are what you see:
16/x
Nikkei: opinion piece questioning Pana's relationship w/ Tesla
Web: Tesla is a major risk to Pana, urges reconsideration
Nikkei: "going private" saw seeds of uncertainty for Pana
BB: Tesla's cost advantage re: cobalt use
17/x
Mainichi: Pana stock down thanks to Musk's "going private" tweet
Web: Pana stock down due to Tesla-risk
BB: Sumitomo material expand customer base to reduce Tesla-dependence
Reuters: Sumitomo material is focused on Toyota & Pana
18/x
Web: Automotive site reviews Tesla
Nikkei: Pana reduces Tesla-dependence on PV
Web: DOJ investigation into "going private" tweet
Web: Can Pana stick w/ Tesla?
Reuters: Pana will ad capacity at GF1 if Tesla requests
19/x
Reuters: Pana wants to join Tesla in China
Web: Pana optimistic on Tesla's production woes
BB: Pana & Tesla top EV batt. producer
Mainichi: Pana to supply PV cells to non-Tesla customers
20/x
Web: Pana optimistic on reducing dependence on Tesla
Nikkan (via BB?): Pana can't make enough batt for Tesla
Mainichi: Does Pana join Tesla at Shanghai?

See the contrast b/w JPN press vs. BB/Reuters/Nikkan (via BB)?
21/x
This is just a quick survey of what Tesla coverage looks like in JPN, not a rigorous study. I simply have no time for much more. As you may know, Tesla sells very few cars in JPN, and it's just another exotic car company there.
22/x
So it's no surprise that Tesla is largely ignored by JPN press. Bloomberg (BB) prob. publishes more than all major JPN papers combined. For those looking for a decent source in Eng., Nikkei Asian Review conveys the message from Pana fairly well, IMHO.
23/x
I myself simply ignore anything JPN-related from BB or Reuters. YMMV.
