Twitter consumers are often depressed and annoyed by Twitter. I don't feel that pain. Here is How To Twitter (In Two Tweets):
Before you follow someone, read their last 10 tweets. Only follow them if the tweets are spread out over 5+ days and you would be *happy* to see 8-10 of them in your timeline.
If you see a tweet that doesn't make you happy, note the person who tweeted/retweeted it into your feed. The second time you note them, unfollow them.
It is easier to curate my following list than manage a list of filtered words.
