Brad Mehldau, Thundercat guest on this jazz/funk record that's modern, playful and exhilarating without losing sight of the groove.

Hiro Kone - Pure Expenditure:

Dark Ambient/Acid Techno/Experimental record by New York City's Nicky Mao. It's like Goth Autechre, if Autechre was a woman. Buy this record.

New Optimism - Amazon to LeFrak:

Miho Hatori (formerly of Cibo Matto) debuts her new project, which both reflects on that band's highs while charting new ways forward.

Basically everything on Pi Recordings is stellar, forward thinking jazz shepherded by some of the form's most outfield thinkers, but I wanna highlight Steve Coleman's Natal Eclipse's album "Morphogenesis," some of the most accessible free jazz I've heard.

Tangents - New Bodies:

Australian "post-everything" quintet weaving a rich, dense tapestry of electronics, orchestrals, noise, free jazz and dub through serenity. This one's brought me a lot of peace this year.

Jon Hassell - Listening to Pictures (Pentimento Volume One):

My second-favorite album of the year. Murky, stilted hip-hop beats pave the way for distorted, obtuse trumpet. New dimensions opening up everywhere. A brilliant return by an old master.

I have been a fan of Arthur C. Clarke for a long-time. His collaboration with Stanley Kubrick yielded one of my favorite movies of all-time ("2001: A Space Odyssey") and his book "Childhood's End" is one of my favorite reads of all-time. /1
