Hope is an impossible, circular thing.
I understand what Dr. Blasey Ford did because it is what I find myself doing over and over: Saying what you have to say. Not to turn the hearts that are hard, not to inform, not because you occupy the space in the landscape of sympathy to really hold sway before your onlookers
You speak for no other reason than that some spirit at your core presses on.
We urge people to engage with the democratic process because a change in institutions will require energy and heart. But energy and heart can only exist where those things already are. Hope requires a critical mass of hope that is already around us.
You can’t get excited about the power of your vote if you don’t think the people around you are just as excited to exercise theirs. You can’t expect, demand a better future unless you believe that there are numerous unseen others who want the same.
Hope is therefore both a logical impossibility and a real-life miracle, a daughter who is her own mother, a thing that begets itself into being.
Today my hope is low. Today I choose to hope.
