NEW REPORT: The National Task Force on the Rule of Law and Democracy releases a new report designed to turn what have traditionally been unwritten rules and norms of government behavior into commonsense, bipartisan laws. bit.ly/2Ot9cyk
It is time to turn soft norms into hard law. The Task Force — chaired by former U.S. Attorney @PreetBharara and former New Jersey Governor @GovCTW — recommend taking the following steps.
Proposal 1: Modernize financial disclosure rules to prevent self-dealing and corruption.
Proposal 2: Require all sitting presidents and presidential candidates to release their tax returns.
Proposal 3: Require independent financial review for incoming presidents, vice presidents, and other senior officials.
Proposal 4: Enforce the constitution’s foreign and domestic emoluments clauses to prevent improper payments from foreign and state governments.
Proposal 5: Extend conflicts of interest rules to the president and vice president.

Proposal 6: Require explanations when the president pardons a close associate. bit.ly/2Ot9cyk
Proposal 7: Require the White House to put clear limits on who can talk to the Justice Department about ongoing cases. bit.ly/2Ot9cyk
Proposal 8: Empower the watchdog Office of Government Ethics to better enforce ethics laws. bit.ly/2Ot9cyk
Proposal 9: Pass a resolution expressly and categorically condemning self-pardons. bit.ly/2Ot9cyk
Proposal 10: Empower agency inspectors general to
investigate improper interference in law enforcement
matters. bit.ly/2Ot9cyk
Proposal 11: Shield special counsels from arbitrary firing. bit.ly/2Ot9cyk
The Task Force is a bipartisan group of former public servants and policy experts housed at the Brennan Center. Read their full series of solutions to repair and revitalize our democracy. bit.ly/2Ot9cyk
