This is enormous. Following yesterday's hacking accusations against Russia, Juncker has taken the opportunity to attempt to detach the EU imperialist bloc from the war-drive. sputniknews.com/europe/2018100…
This speaks to both splits between US imperialism and the EU imperialist bloc, and splits within the EU itself. Juncker's framing here links his attempts to secure a detente between Russia and the EU very directly with the Iran deal. 
As I have argued, Iran is rapidly becoming a locus for the confrontation between the EU and the US. Whilst the EU remains committed to continuing trade with Iran, it is evident that this is not a simple process.
I think it reasonable to say that the EU requires Russian support politically and economically if it is sincere about maintaining its involvement in Iran. The power of the dollar is enormous and, lacking channels by which to funnel capital, the EU would be permanently outgunned.
Nord Stream 2 is also pertinent. Aside from Germany's need for this import in order to maintain its energy infrastructure, energy trade with Russia is now being considered as a pillar in developing the Euro as a currency capable of fighting the dollar.
As such this move must be primarily viewed as an expression of the imperialist rivalry between the EU and the US. It is incredibly dramatic: Juncker's words here directly pit the EU against NATO strategy. The transatlantic alliance hangs by a thread.
Any attempt to further this line within the EU will, however, be met by huge political fractures within the imperialist bloc. This is considerably obvious when one considers Poland, which is vehemently opposed to any form of friendly relations with Russia.
There are no guarantees in how this will develop. What is clear is that the EU imperialist bloc is split on Russia, a phenomenon which was observable as early as March. How this split will be resolved is a matter of political struggle between imperialists.
The interests of the working class do not feature remotely in this power struggle. Though this may temporarily slow the campaign on Russia, it should not be greeted as a progressive development. The task is to wage uncompromising resistance to imperialism, no matter its form.
