A special #SpiritDay2018 #tbt: The Millennium March on Washington, starting with a picture of me and the great Donna Red Wing, who died in April and remains one of the kindest, smartest souls that I’ve had the pleasure to meet in the LGBT movement over the past decades.
The march itself was unlike anything I ever experienced at that point. So many queer people and their allies — from all over the country and world even — together overtaking the Mall. (And really, the whole city that week.)
At the march, Dennis and Judy Shepard, who remain among the most compassionate people I’ve met in my time on this planet, spoke. It was at another event that weekend that I first spoke with them, a moving moment that stays with me still.
That week, as fate had it, also was the week of the #SCOTUS arguments in Boy Scouts v. James Dale. That experience — I attended arguments and a lunch event hosted by @JamesRDale’s legal team, led by @evanwolfson, afterward — likely solidified my future path toward the law.
(Sorry the picture is bad, @JamesRDale, but it’s all I have! 😭)
And finally, at the big Equality Rocks concert that weekend, I first heard @rufuswainwright. I was immediately won over. He was one of the first proudly queer performers I met and he remains, to me, one of the smartest and most talented songwriters alive today.
I’m so far removed from needing days like #SpiritDay2018 in my life. I’m a privileged, successful, cis white gay guy who’s been out for more than two decades. But remembering that weekend is to remember being young and vulnerable — and knowing how important days like this are. 💜
Night, all, and let us try to be good to one another — and ourselves. 😴💜
