We downloaded tweets containing "migrant caravan", resulting in 341891 tweets from 120471 accounts.
The notable aspect of this trend isn't bots, though we did check a sample of 4656 accounts with recent "migrant caravan" tweets for signs of automation (24/7 operation and/or use of automation apps/services). 138 were flagged (3%), which is about average.
The early on-topic tweets containing "migrant caravan" are where it gets interesting. The first uses of the phrase regarding the "caravan" on Twitter are links to a video report from Ruptly (a subsidiary of Russia Today). Let's take a look at the actual content of the tweets. . .
The first few tweets are straightforward links to news sites (RT, NYT, AP, and something called "DML News"). Once we get to tweet number 12, the conspiracy theories start creeping in, followed shortly thereafter by requests for the Trump administration to intervene militarily.
