It's increasingly obvious that US national security hardliners hyped up the threat of Russian bots/"influence accounts" to generate public consent for their ultimate goal: suppressing alternative American media and consolidating their power over major social media platforms.
We are witnessing state censorship of dissenting media in real time. USG/NATO-backed groups like @SecureDemocracy and @DFRLab function as fronts that supply a civil society patina to the repressive agenda of Western governments.
The mostly joyful lib-left reaction to removal of RW crank Alex Jones - a clear trial balloon - was taken as consent for the broader purge of less prominent, more legit outlets that soon followed. There's no real countervailing force to the natsec state's plans for social media.
The sudden post-election birth of PropOrNot was another trial balloon. It earned some criticism, but its McCarthyite blacklist of alternative media got traction in insider circles. This month, many sites on the list were purged in coordinated fashion. grayzoneproject.com/2018/10/23/fac… 
We still don't know who was behind PropOrNot but I'm now convinced it overlaps w/ the cast of natsec hustlers behind @SecureDemocracy's discredited Hamilton 68 dashboard. WaPo described PropOrNot as "researchers with FP, mil and tech backgrounds." That fits the latter group too.
