As we head into the final weekend before Election Day on November 6th, we can expect a flurry of efforts to push conspiracies and controversies. For example, here’s what we’re seeing happen around the “blexit” hashtag right now over at disinfo2018.com
Among accounts in New Knowledge’s Right Wing Domestic Network (tracked for a history of coordinated disinformation), the "blexit" hashtag is the 2nd most popular hashtag over the last 24 hours (after "maga").
Given the hashtag’s popularity, you might expect that posts linking to the official site for Blexit (blexit dot com) would also be high. But you’d be wrong.
From 10/28/18 to 11/01/18, "blexit" has been mentioned over 6800 times by accounts in this right wing network. However, links to blexit dot com were only shared 225 times over that same period.
Some of the popular webpages shared by accounts within the right wing content farm included context and information about the topic of blexit. This piece on Breitbart was shared 117 times between October 28th and November 1st.
Many links are shared using the "blexit" hashtag to the more popular sites; however, many of the linked stories don't include any details about blexit.
For example, between 10/28 and 11/1 stories about Don Lemon were shared over 3000 times, many using the the blexit hashtag. These stories have nothing to do with blexit.
Over on Reddit, we see this active thread claiming Google is censoring the Blexit web site by not featuring it more prominently in search results. Accounts within the right wing network have amplified the related story on Infowars.
Some linked sites tie the popularity of blexit to polls claiming to show a popularity surge among black voters for President Trump. Still others attempt to link blexit to "walkaway".
From looking at the sharing patterns around the "blexit" hashtag, we do see some organic activity. But, we also see widespread hijacking of the hashtag to amplify narratives that play up existing tensions and divides.
As we head into the final weekend before November 6th, please remember: hashtags are a common tool used to spread disinformation. When a hashtag starts to trend, misinformation opportunists will exploit the opportunity. Read carefully, and rely on trusted sources.
