One thing I’ve discovered recently - lots of older engineers are still in tech. They’re just not super visible.
Small companies, honestly, don’t have enough hard problems to warrant more than one full time super senior engineer.

So at a certain point, if you don’t want to CTO a startup, you disappear into a BigCo - where internal community engagement is often more valuable than external.
So they fall off the public radar. But they’re still around :)
Ageism is definitely a thing at startups! In addition, though, they tend to only sporadically encounter the sort of deep-thinking-required problems that folks with a LOT of experience are good at.

Consulting can be a great option, but sometimes you want something longer term.
