Caveats:
-Taxes/benefits have increased dramatically for companies to offer
-Blizzard would do well to relocate to a less expensive area
-Due to economic challenges last few years, most organizations have been very cautious about profit-sharing w/ staff. Not unique to games industry.
-Rampant unemployment & slow economic growth the last 10 years has emboldened companies to raise job requirements & pay less
-Now that the job market is improving, companies will struggle to retain or recruit if they don't improve compensation.
-Gaming studios are the last bastion of the Dot-Com boom. And now they must restructure to be profitable as competition has increased a LOT
-Remember the Microsoft millionaires? Well... they have gone through these changes over the past 10 years also.
-I applaud Blizzard restructuring compensation to stay solvent. I don't believe it is an Activision problem. It's a competition problem.
-One must consider all of these changes in context: Generational demographics, Media / entertainment choices, smart phone proliferation, sheer number of games available to compete with.
-It has been a long run, but things change in 20 years and players need to adapt
-The outrage over #DiabloImmortal , the attempts to blame the election based stock dip in that announcement, and the players revolt tell me the players have little clue what real life is like. They need to applaud Blizzards innovation, and attempts to appeal to more players
-Blizzard can indeed harness the passion of fans and employees who give all for a product they love. But employees know what they are giving, and why. Change is never fun, but unemployment is worse. And if they are losing their passion, it may be time to move on. That's ok.
-I know people who are struggling at blizzard. Teams facing budget cuts, unable to backfill team members who change roles or leave. Learning to do more with less is no fun at all - but you can weather the storm *if* you believe in the mission, and work your career plan.
-Employment at the company of your choice, in your desired field, in the city / neighborhood you want is *not* a right. It's a gift, a blessing, an opportunity to be grateful for when you find it. Until then, don't stifle your growth because you're not getting your wish
-Be flexible
-Adapt to change
-Be willing to change jobs, careers, industries
-Find an undeserved need, and YOU be the next Blizzard, or Amazon, or Apple
We need the next wave of innovation, growth, passion, and YOU may hold the key.
