You chuck stuff like that in there and you alienate civil liberty advocates and make the whole debate about that. New Labour types need to drop this. it was a shit idea then, it's a shit idea now.
The rest of the proposals are a solution to a problem which does not exist, but the reality is that a Remain campaign needs some kind of offer to people wary of immigration.
These proposals can form the spine, but they need a PR wrapping which makes people like me feel uncomfortable, something that'd appeal to right-wing tabloids. THREE MONTHS AND YOU'RE OUT. That type of thing.
I know, I am not very good at coming up with it. Because it makes me feel physically ill. But the extent to which it makes me cross is the extent to which it would be effective.
Also, and this is really important, having a reactionary element to the campaign does not mean that the whole Remain campaign should be like this. Brexit won by having different campaigns for different demographics.
Remain should be the same - none of the suffocating centralised stale mainstream campaigning of the last referendum. Let a thousand flowers bloom.
That 'firm control of immigration' drive can live alongside the kind that encourages a youth vote, with young activist campaigners celebrating free movement.
But somewhere in that mix, there does need to be an offer on immigration which can peel off at least 10-20% of Leavers.
