A word of explanation is probably in order, so read the following before you watch it.
At the time he made this video, the Hon. Tom @Malinowski was the Washington director of Human Rights Watch, where he was one of my favorite sparring partners on a number of issues: Guantanamo, drone strikes, and what the human rights community called “killer robots.”
On the latter issue, he engaged in a spirited debate on @lawfareblog with @mattwaxman1 and @kennethanderson and me on the subject, with the Hon. Tom @Malinowski taking the view that lethal autonomous weapons should be preemptively banned in treaty.
Matt and Ken and I took the view that we should wait while technology develops and not try to rule out entire classes of weapons.
As part of one of his posts, the Hon. Tom @Malinowski made this video—as I recall, he was on a very long flight—in which he resubtitled a Hindi-dubbed edition of Terminator 2.
I very much hope he brings this style of argumentation to the United States Congress.
On a serious note, and the video is a true reflection of this, the Hon. Tom @Malinowski is a true pleasure to disagree with. The House of Representatives needs a bit of that.
He’s also a very serious mind on all sorts of issues, particularly related to foreign policy and democracy. The people of the 7th District of New Jersey chose uncommonly well.
And on another serious note, I look forward to the day when he and I go back to discussing matters about which we disagree, like whether lethal autonomous weapons should be preemptively banned in international law.
