This is my cat, Molly. I found out Friday that either she has aggressive cancer for which there isn't much to be done, or she has somewhat less aggressive cancer that might be stopped by amputating her leg. 1/x
This isn't a thread asking for sympathy or whatever. Obviously, I'm heartbroken, and if you're the sort of person who does prayers or workings or whatever and want to do one, I'm touched and grateful. But this is about something else.
I have pet health insurance. I'm a broke-ass millennial. If I didn't have pet insurance, instead of being able to sit her and cuddle her and worry and grieve, I'd probably either be desperately trying to raise money, or freaking out because I couldn't give her the care she needs.
As it is, the only real financial worry I have is about being able to pay for surgery or chemo or, heaven forbid, euthanasia up front. But fortunately, I have family and friends who've already offered to lend me money if I need it.
And "hey, can you lend me a few thousand dollars for a couple weeks to pay for surgery until I get reimbursed" is a much easier thing to bring yourself to ask than "can you give me money which I might never be able to pay back."
And I'm not faced with the horrific choice of having to let her suffer, or put her down when there are treatments that could give her more good time, because I can't afford her care.
I am telling you all of this because if you're a broke-ass millennial with pets who are family, and they're young, pet insurance might save your pet suffering, and save you suffering, the sick feeling of not being able to pay for care, too.
So if I were me those years ago when I got my kitties, and I almost didn't sign them up because I wasn't sure if I could afford it, if Present Me could talk to Past Me, I'd be like, "ask for it as a holiday gift." (Obviously, Past Me figured it out, but it was close.)
I dunno, I don't have much wisdom to offer younger millennials about how to navigate our brutal, broken economy, but I was just sitting here cried out and thinking, "the one bright spot is, unlike everything else, this is one area where I'm not terrified about money."
So anyway, if you've got young pets and can afford to insure them, you might save Future You from having to worry about how to pay for surgery or something like that for your pets. If you can't, and you have generous gift-giving family, maybe ask for it as a gift.
Anyway, probably going to be off Twitter for a bit, but just wanted to pass that on while I was thinking of it.
