HOT OFF THE PRESSES! In this piece we make the case that we are in an abortion infodemic and lay out an urgent research agenda.

This infodemic has unique features that make it challenging to address & this has implications for future infodemics. 🧵

First, let’s review why the loss of #reprorights puts women's health at risk. Here are the stats on maternal mortality in the US compared to other industrialized nations.

This is inexcusable.

2/x Image
Digging deeper into the data reveals enormous inequities. Black women have 3 times the maternal mortality rate as white women. As do Native American women, women with diabetes, CVD, and obesity.

🧵 In response to MO Attorney General Bailey’s latest attack on gender-affirming care, we are having pop-up clinics for new gender-affirming care patients in Springfield (MO), STL, & Fairview Heights, IL, starting Monday, 4/17. Learn more:…. #NoMOTransBans Looking to start gender-aff...
MO Attorney General Bailey is abusing his power to attack trans Missourians. We sued to stop his sham investigation into our gender-affirming health care program, which serves patients 16 & older.
On Thursday, 4/13, AG Bailey issued an emergency rule that would effectively ban gender-affirming care in MO for adults & young people. We encourage any Missourian interested in starting gender-affirming care to make an appointment before the regulation takes effect on 4/27.

Religious fundamentalists in the US are morally no different to the fascist fundamentalists of Islam.

The antediluvian and misogynist views of both are an affront to decency and liberal democracy.

Hi, I'm just an abortion provider, wanting you to know about the wave of anti-abortion legislation happening across the country that @PressSec and @POTUS have yet to comment on:
AZ just passed a bill banning abortions for fetal indications, and confers embryos and fetuses civil rights as long as they are inside a uterus (but not if they are created/destroyed in a lab setting, eg during in vitro fertilization). 2/
OK just passed 3 anti-abortion laws, including a ban after fetal cardiac activity is detected, revoking medical licenses for physicians who perform abortions, and that only OBGYNs may perform abortions. 3/

BREAKING: We’re taking North Carolina to court. With our partners @PPFA, @ACLU, @ACLU_NC, we’re challenging medically unnecessary abortion restrictions that have rolled back abortion access and stigmatized essential health care.
These restrictions, known as TRAP laws, (“targeted restrictions on abortion providers") disproportionately impact NC Black communities and those living in rural areas, making it even harder to access care in the state.
TRAP laws force abortion providers to adhere to medically unnecessary requirements that NO other providers of office-based medical care must meet, including:

NEW: Ahead of the 10th anniversary of Kenya's Constitution, our report details how the government's failure to uphold its obligations has harmed the reproductive health of its people—and how to better protect these rights. #KatibaforSRHR #KatibaAt10…
Although the Constitution (or "Katiba") has provisions for safeguarding #reprorights—including abortion—they are ignored, sidelined, or rendered ineffective. The result: Women and girls, especially from low-income communities, opt for unsafe abortion. #KatibaforSRHR #KatibaAt10
Recommendations to protect safe abortion access include:

- Training police and prosecutors
- Eliminating legal loopholes that fuel harassment against women and #SRH providers
- Reinstating Standards & Guidelines to reduce unsafe abortion practices

Just two candidates left... now taking the stage at #OurRightsOurCourts, @ewarren!!

Tune in NOW:…
@ewarren .@ewarren says courts are moving in the direction of protecting a "corporate minority" instead of individual rights.

"They have become a core part of tilting our country and our laws in a direction ... that helps those at the top and undercuts everyone else. #OurRightsOurCourts
@ewarren "We need a court system that is independent of our political system." - @ewarren #OurRightsOurCourts

This is especially important to the work that we do at the Center. If courts do not adhere to the rule of law, it hinders our ability to protect and expand #reprorights.

As we head into the third hour of #OurRightsOurCourts, another presidential candidate is taking the stage. Welcome, @MichaelBennet!
@MichaelBennet "We now have judges who are getting lifetime appointments who will not say whether Brown vs. Board of Education is settled law." - @MichaelBennet

The integrity of our federal judiciary has never been more precarious. We need a plan to protect #OurRightsOurCourts
@MichaelBennet "Just like I don't think there's any compromise on the science on climate change, I don't think there's any compromise ... in terms of women's access to reproductive health & #reprorights."

@MichaelBennet closes by stressing:

"Our democracy is at risk." #OurRightsOurCourts

Our litigation team is in court today arguing to block Mississippi's 6-week abortion ban.

A panel of three judges on that court already struck down the state's 15-week ban, and this is an even more extreme attempt to restrict abortion access in the state.
Then, tomorrow, we're headed to the District Court of Oklahoma County to block two harmful state laws from taking effect. The laws ban the use of telemedicine to provide medication abortion and prohibit qualified advanced practice clinicians from providing abortions.
These are just two of 31 cases that we are currently litigating to protect #reprorights and abortion access across the U.S. We’ll continue to take states like Mississippi and Oklahoma to court until anti-abortion legislators get the message: we will not back down.

🚨 #BREAKING: I'm suing the Trump administration over an unlawful rule that threatens access to safe and legal abortion care for those who buy health insurance through #ACA exchanges: #ReproRights
This confusing rule would require all #ACA health plans send separate bills for any part of their premiums that go toward abortion coverage.

If a consumer doesn't pay both bills, they could lose ALL of their health care coverage.
This new rule also harms the District and its residents because it:

❌Increases costs and limits access to health care

❌Imposes unnecessary administrative costs on states, including $3.93 million annually for @DCHealthLink

❌Violates the Constitution and federal law

Today marks 47 years since #RoevWade became the law of the land, and yet we are still fighting relentless assaults on women's access to a safe, legal abortion. Image
I’m proud to have joined state AGs in fighting attacks on #ReproRights, including:

✅Taking legal action to keep clinics open
✅Opposing efforts to defund Planned Parenthood
✅Fighting a gag rule that stops women from getting complete information about healthcare options
Women in D.C. are especially vulnerable to attacks on #ReproRights because of the District's inability to govern itself like any other state.

#DCStatehood is critical for us to help protect our residents’ fundamental rights:

Robert Destro, Trump’s nominee for Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, has a long history of opposition to reproductive rights, including openly advocating against contraception, abortion, and #RoevWade.
Destro has also failed to respect LGBTQ+ rights, and has repeatedly campaigned against civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ folks in the name of religious liberty. But we all know there’s nothing moral about denying services to people based on who they love or how they identify.
We cannot allow a man who openly campaigns against #reprorights and LGBTQ+ rights to claim responsibility for ensuring that the U.S. delivers on international human rights agreements and responds appropriately to rights violations.

Speaking on the Senate floor to say that I am appalled by the extreme, cruel, shameful abortion ban passed in Alabama. This is nothing short of an attack on women & part of a larger effort to take away women’s constitutional right to safe, legal abortion.…
I also want to outline why I oppose Wendy Vitter’s lifetime nomination to the federal bench: Vitter is partisan, has bolstered misinformation about women’s #ReproRights, and is undoubtedly #UnfitToJudge. #CourtsMatter
Vitter has voiced more support for outright lies about women’s health than for Brown v. Board of Ed—the historic decision that struck down state-sponsored segregation. She can't be trusted to decide the historic cases of tomorrow. Vitter's nom should be rejected. #CourtsMatter

Instead of expanding Medicaid and tackling Georgia's maternal health crisis, Republican legislators are attacking #ReproRights and pushing extreme bills that risk women’s lives for political gain. SB 218, HB 481 & HB 546 are cruel, unnecessary and dangerous proposals. 1/ #gapol
In the fight for progress and economic equality, we must always support reproductive justice. We must continue to fight to protect and expand access to affordable reproductive health services for all, and we must oppose any effort to move us backward. 2/ #gapol
Access to repro health services has allowed women across the U.S. to pursue higher ed, enter and stay in the workforce and provide for their families. Every woman—regardless of income, race or region—deserves the right to control their own body and forge a path for themselves. 3/

On the 170th anniversary of the Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls where suffragists proudly proclaimed that "all men AND women are created equal," it's sad we're still striving to achieve that vision. It's why I introduce the Equal Rights Amendment every Congress, and...
...why I proudly voted for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that President Obama signed into law, and continue to work to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act to bolster enforcement of our pay discrimination laws so my daughter & granddaughter don't face the same wage gap my mother did
It's why I'm working to #StopKavanaugh from joining the Supreme Court, where he will surely oppose women's equality by overturning #RoevWade, and helping religious employers deny coverage for contraception. Rallied w/ @CoryBooker @PPact @NJ_CASA this week…

BREAKING: Trump just announced his #SCOTUSpick - Brett Kavanaugh, who has a troubling record on #reprorights, the environment, the ACA, and more. Keep reading to learn more about #WhatsAtStake and why we must #StopKavanaugh ⬇️
Brett Kavanaugh is one of the most cravenly partisan choices Trump could have made. He’s been called the “Forrest Gump of Republican politics,” as he seems to always show up in high-stakes, far-right political battles and conspiracy theories.
Kavanaugh doesn’t believe that a sitting president can be indicted, and believes presidents should have wide latitude to hire and fire special counsels. His nomination could shield Trump from facing accountability for his crimes and corruption.

We really need to talk more about #abortion as an option for women.
It's hard to say this and hard to hear it for many, but just because you discover you are pregnant doesn't mean you must carry that pregnancy to term. Your decision will last the rest of your life--and the rest of the life of any child you decide to carry to term.
And no, I am not advocating #abortion.
I'm advocating thinking about parenthood & all it entails.
Because once you have a child, you can't just walk away from that life.
And women/girls are talked into maintaining pregnancies every day.
More discussion would change that.

In the flurry of attention to #KevinWilliamson, there's been zero mention that the exchange that resulted in Williamson's firing from @TheAtlantic was with the insufferable editor of @NRO, Charles Cooke, who agreed 100% that women should be executed for having abortions.
"I would totally go with treating it like any other crime up to and including hanging,” Williamson said.
Cooke quickly concurred: “I absolutely agree.” (see @Shareblue for more of this exchange)

Whither comment from @NRO either affirming they are fine with hanging women or no?
In February I had a testy exchange with Cooke who called me "stupid" for calling him out for being the first person to attack David Hogg. Note that because he's a white guy with a British accent, neither he nor @NRO received any internet penalty except, apparently, from me.
