StatsBomb have been collecting Champions League and Europa League data this season, so here's a thread of the team radars from the competition for the match-ups just drawn:
1. Liverpool v Bayern Munich
Group strength is always a factor here, but Bayern have been just fine in the CL this season, this will be one of many cracking ties:
2. Atlético Madrid v Juventus
Best xG difference in the group stage? Juventus.
Best xG against? Juventus
Third best xG against? Atlético
Big defensive match-up.
3. Tottenham v Borussia Dortmund
A familiar tie between two teams that know each other well...
Based on the group stage it appears Tottenham's attack and Dortmund's defence were their main strengths:

Two teams that were stronger in attack than defence during the group stages, could be an entertaining match-up:

Another tricky tie to pick, Porto's results were ahead of their metrics...

The tie nobody wanted was the one Schalke got. They will have to defend at least as well as they did in the group stage to have any chance at all here.

Since it's the hot topic and there are many new fans around due to the World Cup, we're going to do a short thread about Finishing Skill.

The very best players in the world score on about 20% or 1 in every 5 of their shots. (Seems low, doesn't it?)
On average, players score goals about in line with their Expected Goals (xG) numbers. They can score more or less over short periods of time, but in most cases they "revert to the mean."

Example: Raheem Sterling scored 17 non-penalty goals last ssn, xG expected about 15.5.
Now this is football, which means strange things sometimes happen.

Remember when Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the world's greatest goalscorers, could not score for half a season?

#FCBarcelona 2017/18 accounts cover a season when they won La Liga (for the third time in four years) and the Copa del Rey, but were eliminated by AS Roma in the Champions League quarter-finals. Some thoughts in the following thread.
#FCBarcelona profit before tax fell €11m from €31m to €20m (profit after tax down from €18m to €13m). Revenue (club definition) rose 29% (€206m) from €708m to a record high of €914m, though this included €209m gain on player sales (up €183m). Offset by major cost growth
Excluding player sales, #FCBarcelona revenue rose €42m (6%) from €648m to €690m. Highest growth was in marketing & advertising €19m (16%) to €335m, then competitions €11m (12%) to €104m, broadcasting €9m (5%) to €187m and season tickets & membership €9m (18%) to €60m.

Manchester United are the second Premier League club after #MCFC to publish 2017/18 financial results, covering a season when they were runners-up in the league and FA Cup, but were eliminated by Sevilla in the Champions League last 16. Some thoughts in the following thread #MUFC
#MUFC profit before tax down from £57m to £26m, mainly due to higher player costs, as wage bill shot up £32m and player amortisation rose £14m, while revenue only up £9m. Tax bill increased from £17m to £63m as a change in US corporate tax rate led to a £49m non-cash write-off.
#MUFC revenue only grew £9m (2%). Only meaningful increase was broadcasting, up £10m (5%) to £204m. Commercial income was basically flat at £276m, while match day dropped £2m (2%) to £110m. Profit on player sales rose £7m to £18m.

Today, I found out that some young people I know (ages 15 and 16) are in 'school' Whatsapp groups with teachers.

I salute the dedication of teachers who go beyond, but I think this a very dangerous breach of privacy / work-play balance, and must be stopped.

Here's why: #Thread
1) You cannot join a Whatsapp group without revealing your phone number. This is an immediate risk for minors - the room for abuse is so large I'm stunned that schools allow this. Pedophilia, sexual predation, grooming - all possible when adults have kids' phone numbers.
2) There is also risk of harassment by other kids. I remember my friends in high school (esp girls) who kept phone numbers very private, because they didn't want to be constantly bombarded.

When a teacher makes you join, there's no opt out. Everyone gets your phone number.

#MCFC profit before tax up from £0.1m (£1.1m after tax) to £10.4m, as previous season was adversely impacted by change in year-end resulting in an extra month’s costs with minimal revenue uplift. Revenue rose £27m (6%) to £500.5m, only second English club above £0.5 bln.
All #MCFC revenue streams up: commercial income rose £14m (7%) to £232m; broadcasting increased £8m (4%) to £212m; and match day was £5m (9%) higher at £57m. Profit on player sales was up £4m to £39m.
