THREAD⚡️

Let's talk about Facebook's latest data "scandal"

- My over-riding feeling is Facebook was sloppy here

- The latest accusations look shocking on first-reading

- Much of the problem stems from Facebook failing to explain things to users in a clearer way
- The failure by Facebook (intentionally or not) to cease doing things regarding access to user data it said it had ceased doing is unacceptable.

- The access to your Facebook messages part of the story is less shocking than it first reads.
- For example, is it really that shocking that a 3rd party Facebook integration with Spotify which users opt-ed into allowing them to share music in messages with friends, led to messages being 'shared' with those apps?
- The reality is there are no examples of abuse of this access by data partners.

- We are all just far more alarmed by what WE agreed to let Facebook do with our data compared to years ago when we were less cautious about data security, and not so suspicious of Facebook.
- Facebook's response to the NYT scandal doesn't do a great job at addressing concerns in a clear way.

- Facebook's tone is argumentative. You can almost feel the frustration of the author when they were writing it by the title they used "Let's clear up a few things about..."
- Facebook has some justification for feeling pissed off, in that it will see many of the accusations as unnecessarily inflammatory and based on things they feel they did not hide when this activity occurred years ago.
- The problem is it does look like Facebook failed to act or could have done a better job at explaining its data sharing activity to users. And it should have given clearer signposting front and centre about what they were agreeing to when opt-ing into some of these integrations
- Facebook needs to be reminded they *may* not have broken any laws BUT they don't appear to have operated in the spirit of the law... in the eyes of its users.

- The questions now is what will the fall out be from this latest Facebook data sharing exposé
- You have to wonder...
If after all previous Facebook data scandals large numbers of users have not quit Facebook, will this latest revelation have much impact
- There is a growing sense of Facebook data scandal fatigue by the general public.

- This may be true... But i'm not sure UK parliament and US senators will be as laissez faire about it.
Also...
- Facebook denied/refused to detail how it used 3rd party data about user's other online activity to power its People You May Know feature

- We all suspected it was doing something sneaky to make friend recommendations. Now we may have evidence to proof it
