sometimes i’m only going to these meetings to make sure a public meeting is actually happening in front of any of the public
you can’t make a government meeting so boring that it will ensure privacy! except the sister city commission. they could be up to something sinister and we wouldn’t know because i refuse to care about it.
this city school board budget meeting promises to be pretty damn dull, though. this powerpoint doesn’t have any of the flair of the ones we saw at the council retreat yesterday.
lol this assumes anyone can afford to buy a house
(virginia is 32nd in teacher salaries, so we don’t even appear in that column on this slide)
girlfriend revenues are up, baby
(sorry, that’s GENERAL FUND revenues. false alarm.)
the district’s statistics for how many students are “economically disadvantaged” DO NOT include students who would qualify for free/reduced lunch if they attend one of the district’s 3 CEP schools (and don’t meet another qualifier)
(if greater than 40% of a school’s students are eligible for free/reduced lunch, the school can be designated a CEP school and then free breakfast & lunch are made available for all students at the school. cville city schools has 3 CEP schools.)
not counting the students at these schools in the district’s statistics about economically disadvantaged students is a new thing & doesn’t make a lot of sense!
amy laufer asks if there’s been any indication that students are unenrolling in benefit programs due to concerns about immigration enforcement. more research is needed.
dr atkins asks about the racial breakdown of the data - it shows black, white, and other. what is in “other?” she says some state data just excludes multiracial students entirely and wants to know how this data is handling those students.
everything is interrelated! the school system is in communication with neighborhood development services to make projections about growth in the city’s population & how that will affect enrollmeE81z
high schools cost more per square foot because high schoolers are much larger, obviously.
oh thank god this powerpoint also has an unnecessary and confusing triangle
a lot of uncertainty about how the district is going to move forward to address overcrowding. one possibility is moving 5th grade back to the elementary schools & switching our “upper elementary” to a regular middle school.
some possibilities...
someone at the table jokingly suggested taking over the landmark hotel & putting a school there.
ANYTHING would make more sense than another decade of the bare metal beams of an unfinished hotel on some of the city’s most expensive real estate.
that meeting was short & painless! and, i think? i hope?, my last government meeting of 2018. not a lot of governing happens around christmas.
