The dreaded YEAR-IN-REVIEW thread commences.
Much of my focus in 2018, and going forward, has been on extremist ideologies. In January, I contributed an essay to the @AspenJSP publication, Pluralism in Peril. assets.aspeninstitute.org/content/upload…
In April, for @TheAtlantic, I revisited the perennial question of which crimes we deem to be terrorism, and which we do not, and why it matters theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
(Definitions were another big theme this year.)
In August, my third book, 'Extremism,' was published by @mitpress. It tackles the difficult question of what extremism is, how we can identify it, and how these questions shape our responses to it. amzn.to/2MhXwgQ
I talked about why this topic matters in an @mitpress blog post here mitpress.mit.edu/blog/problem-e…
An excerpt from the book is also available here medium.com/@mitpress/the-…
At @VOX_Pol, which I joined as a research fellow this year, we held a book launch in Amsterdam that was pretty cool! twitter.com/i/moments/1031…
@NewAmerica also hosted a great US launch event with @marybethaltier, which you can see here
And my old friends at @TheLoopcast hosted me for a podcast discussion theloopcast.com/e/extremism-wi…
I am grateful to everyone who took the time to provide feedback here on Twitter or write a review; an overview of reactions to the book can be found here twitter.com/i/moments/1037…
In October, @VOX_Pol published the Alt-Right Twitter Census, which can be found here voxpol.eu/new-research-r…
Drawing on the same research, I wrote about the different groups within the alt-right for @TheAtlantic theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
And for @VOX_Pol also looked at the European element of the movement voxpol.eu/the-alt-right-…
A lot of my work this year was toward future publications. I joined @Swansea_Law where I will continue working in more detail on extremist ideologies as a postgraduate student
I am also plugging away on a project related to dystopian literature. I am publishing bits and pieces on this as I go, such as this look at early Christian dystopian fiction worldgonewrong.net/2018/04/christ…
In the near term, I am buckling down to tackle some more ambitious projects on a longer timeline. My sincerest thanks to everyone for your generous support, without which none of this would be possible, and I look forward to talking to and meeting more of you in the year to come.
