Wow. Chief Justice Roberts joins the liberals in a 5–4 order keeping Trump's new asylum rule on hold.

The era of Kavanaugh's ostensible centrism seems to be over.
I'm glad Chief Justice John Roberts voted to maintain the block on Trump's blatantly unlawful new asylum restrictions. But I'm deeply disturbed that Kavanaugh voted to let them take effect. slate.com/news-and-polit… @Slate

I find this case—and Kavanaugh's vote—mind-binding. Go read the statute and you will see that Congress EXPRESSLY declared that unauthorized immigrants could seek asylum. Trump wants to rewrite federal immigration law, and four justices are OK with that? law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/…

Gorsuch fans are going to enjoy today’s SCOTUS arguments over civil asset forfeiture. When the Indiana Solicitor General said the Excessive Fines Clause doesn’t apply to the states, Gorsuch looked incredulous and said: “Come on, General. Really?!”
Gorsuch then told the Indiana SG that he was going to lose, and if he kept arguing the merits, he’d lose even worse. Then he and Sotomayor teamed up to say he was defending a “star chamber.”
So, yeah, SCOTUS is going to apply the Excessive Fines Clause to the states, and probably do so in a way that limits civil asset forfeiture. Gorsuch was smiling like the cat that caught the canary.

Breaking: A federal judge has DENIED a lawsuit filed by Native Americans disenfranchised by North Dakota's voter ID law.

This decision ensures that hundreds, perhaps thousands of Native Americans will not be able to vote in the upcoming election.

BREAKING: The Trump administration is moving to prohibit people who illegally cross the U.S. border with Mexico from claiming asylum.
On a call with reporters senior administration officials said the move was to funnel credible fear claims more quickly and come up with an "efficient" way to process. They said the "vast majority" of people who come to the US claiming credible fear are rejected.
This is President Trump following through with a statement he made last week from the WH when he described immigrants as dangerous and a threat to Americans across the country.

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).
