I understand what you are saying. I get it. But with some important caveats.

First, and I have said this before, Donald Trump did not win in 2016. At least not in a sense that had anything to do with voters, or votes.

1/
He "won" b/c external forces, some independent, others colluding, worked simultaneously, and single-mindedly to override the will of the American electorate.

He won because Republican Governors & Secretary of States in several states betrayed their citizens.

2/
He won because the media vacated their proper, necessary, and intended role. The Fourth Estate failed in every fundamental way imaginable.

He won because our greatest foreign adversary utilized technology to author lies to promote him and undermine @HillaryClinton.

3/
I believe there was a conspiracy, I believe the efforts of Republicans in several states to remove as many voters (usually black) from voter rolls affected the outcome in those states.

I believe these things.

That being true I don't believe that Donald Trump can win 2020.

4/
He can't win

That is UNLESS those same external forces reconvene and are allowed to carry out the same crimes against our Republic.

If this happens there is nothing that Democracy can do by itself. Our votes won't matter. Tweets won't matter. Protests won't matter.

5/
We are helpless in that eventuality because that means that our failures have been total and systemic. It would mean that the only Constitutional safeguards we have been given did not work again.

It would mean that the American republic is truly dead.

6/
I believe that 2020 is more like 2008 than 2008.

I knew then that a Democrat would win the Presidency. So it mattered who we nominated. It mattered b/c the success or failures, the shortcomings or excesses of that administration would define the Party for decades.

7/
That will be more true in 2020. If we nominate the wrong person, their failures will be amplified because of present failures.

We must be the cure, not just another variant of the disease.

I believe that Sanders exhibits many of the same faults and instincts as Trump.

8/
If by some tragic turn (open primaries, increasing caucuses) Sanders wins the nomination I believe we would trading one failed dictator for another.

That would not be good for the party or the nation.

In which case I would argue that a third option must created & embraced.
