1/ Spy agencies like to discredit people by giving them info they crave...

I worked on an explosive story on the late Robin Cook. He was given a consultancy position with a firm that had built up Saddam Hussein's WMD programmes before his infamous Iraq speech to Parliament.
2/ Robin Cook was towering figure in the British Labour Party, which I respected. He was part of the reason I'd joined.

A part of the story concerning the financing of terrorist organisations during the al-Aqsa intifada was seriously flawed. My sources burnt me on purpose.
But the damage was done to the target. Senior journos from The Telegraph and The Daily Mail got hold of the story, but I told them about the flaws.

Robin Cooke died of a heart attack within a few weeks.

I hope it wasn't related.
