/ Company culture is frequently tossed around as the most important asset of a company, when Peter Thield made a $150 million investment in AirBnB, his biggest piece of advice was "don't fuck up the culture," but what makes a culture good or bad?
/ One element is the ability to compress culture in an efficient way. Phrases like "disagree and commit" carry lots of weight in transmitting an ethos. @eugenewei has a great post on this: eugenewei.com/blog/2017/5/11…
/ Another critical element is that it makes actual tradeoffs which team members face on a day to day bsis. "We have high integrity" is not really valuable because which company wouldn't want to have high integrity (or at least signal that it does).
/ "Move fast and break things" is a legitimate principle because not all companies would want to do it. A law firm or power company would not want to "move fast and break things" but a consumer web app company might.
/ Ideally, someone with a good grasp of these principles should be able to use them to guide him or herself to make the "right" decision, as defined by the tribe, in almost every situation they are presented with.
/ What other heuristics qualify as a "good culture"?
/ P.S. What are your favorite company culture documents/handbooks? Here's some of mine:
