1. The Canadian media runs the same redemption story about a humbled & chastened Michael Bryant again & again. Problem is, he killed a guy. So, each story must tell a bullshit version of the killing. Here's the latest: theglobeandmail.com/canada/article…
2. It's amazing how much bullshit is packed into those 2 paragraphs. Let's add it up....
3. This is bullshit. Not how it happened at all. Sheppard blocked Bryant's Saab w his bicycle at a red light and wouldn't move when the light turned green. He looked behind and smiled. He was acting like an asshole. So Bryant hit him, lightly, with his car. Sheppard fell off.
4. This is bullshit. "The car" didn't do anything. BRYANT hit the gas again and drove right into Sheppard "full on, at high speed" according a close eyewitness, swerving into the oncoming lane and stopping. Sheppard was smashed over the hood and fell on to the pavement.
5. This is a BS. When "it" started again? Was this magical car possessed? Bryant started the car after Sheppard got up & grabbed the driver's door to stop him from fleeing the scene. "You are my witnesses!" he yelled to onlookers. Bryant hit the gas hard with Sheppard holding on.
6. This is a LIE. The cyclist didn't *do* anything but cling on for dear life. Bryant drove him hard into a hydrant, killing him.
7. This is misleading bullshit x2. "evidence presented in court" suggests there was a trial. There wasn't. And saying that Sheppard was the instigator suggests he got physical first. But it was Bryant who made first contact.
8. This is bullshit on purpose. Bryant was never asked to take a breathalyzer test. He was a known alcoholic hothead with rage issues who had just killed a cyclist with his car, yet he was not asked to take a breathalyzer test. Or a drug test.
9. Don't take my word for all this. Listen to an eyewitness talking to the cops and to another eyewitness' call to 911. It'll just take you a couple of minutes, starting at 4min, 15sec. It's astonishing. canadalandshow.com/podcast/michae…
10. (About calling 911: right after the incident Bryant drove to the Park Hyatt and then took a full 3 minutes to get his story straight before calling the police, while Sheppard lay dying on the street. A detail excluded from the Globe's summary.)
11. Bryant's account has never been tested at trial. He has never been cross examined. It is contradicted by several eyewitnesses. Yet it is repeated as fact by the media again and again:
torontolife.com/city/michael-b…
cbc.ca/player/play/22…
cbc.ca/news/canada/to…
12. The real lesson of the Bryant/Sheppard story is that justice works differently in this country for some people. The fact that the media sees it as a story about one man finding personal salvation is...grotesque.
13. Who are they trying to convince? Who is even interested in hearing the killer's side of the story, again and again? Why the Toronto Life cover? Why the book deal? Why the TedX talk? Why fawning profile after fawning profile, year after year?
14. It's the Canadian press at its worst. It's comforting the comfortable. It's 'Power is right, because power'. There is zero introspection into why we tell this story, and zero accountability for telling it wrong. I'm sick of correcting it.
