Weird. Dover's projected to be a huge loser in the case of a no deal Brexit.
A) Traffic through the port will be gunged up across most of Kent
B) Other ports will be used as contingency, taking business away from it
And yet their local MP is super-Brexity.

I can only assume that the locals have no idea about the Brexit steamroller that's about to pound the economy of their town into the ground. They may have voted to leave, but @CharlieElphicke really ought to do his job of representing their *interests* properly, and protect them.
It's a pity, because Dover's a nice place. And there are some gorgeous views from the Castle. The town's suffered numerous economic setbacks before, but this has the potential to be the worst - worse even than when the Channel Tunnel pinched a ton of business away.

Esther McVey TODAY talked about the "implementation period" after a no deal Brexit on WTO terms.

Like somebody walking onto a football pitch in the 90th minute, picking up the ball, running down the field & scoring a touchdown. Staggering lack of understanding of fundamentals!
Stupidity so great, it gets you trending (alongside Liam Fox and his Brexit "isn't national suicide" comment.)
That really should be a clue to all politicians: when you pop in, have a little chat in the studio, and bang you're a Twitter trend, it's not because you're fascinating... It's because somewhere in your word salad was nonsense so ridiculous, the whole country is talking about it.

In fact, the most remarkable thing about the whole Brexit process (and in hindsight the most predictable) is the unwavering steadiness of the EU's position. They came together as 27, advanced a common position (based solidly on EU law) and never wavered from it.
Here's another DD classic: "More generally, one of the things that I have discovered in the past few months is that in many areas—not just the City, and not just as regards cars—the balance of negotiating advantage is incredibly heavily stacked our way."

Could Theresa May's Brexit plan B be to do a Cameron: summon the press to Downing Street, quit, then stroll off into Number 10 whistling?

That would go a long way towards explaining why not a word of it has leaked, despite plentiful leaks on all other aspects of Brexit.
Has the added bonus from her POV of stiffing the Brexiters with Brexit at the point of absolutely zero wriggle room, where they have to step up and show competence.
Even that probably wouldn't put the hardcore Brexit headbangers off applying for the role.

Remember, history will remember you were Prime Minister forever, even if you only did the job for a few hours or days before running to the Queen in a panic to tender your own resignation.

1. For a while it very seriously looked like aircraft would be grounded in the event of a no deal #Brexit. Looking at the legalities, it was a reasonable assumption to make. There are, however, contingency measures. (Thread)
2. This is not to say that we are out of the woods. In the EU's own words, "These measures will only ensure basic connectivity and in no means replicate the significant advantages of membership of the Single European Sky."
So what is "basic connectivity"?...
3. This means only the basic four of the "nine freedoms". This means UK airlines will be able to overfly airspace of Member States, make landings for technical purposes and fly passengers from UK directly to destinations within EU, and pick up passengers headed back to the UK.

No10 says EU must decide if it will release a letter of assurances before the vote on Tuesday but EU sources tell me they are waiting for the go-ahead advice from Downing Street 1
The letter could have been released Saturday night ahead of No10 Sunday media blitz but wasn’t .. It could be released tonight or tomorrow ahead of vote .. OR EU/No10 may decide better not since 2
The EU letter will I’m told contain assurances/explanations of current deal and nothing new. The letter would come from Juncker/Tusk in Brussels and they can’t change the #Brexit deal without negotiation with and go ahead from 27 EU leaders 3

Tutti i governi Ue si stanno preparando con avvertimenti a cittadini, amministrazioni, imprese. Alcuni assumono migliaia di persone per le dogane.

Forse mi son perso qualcosa. Ma il governo italiano che fa?
Facciamo un esempio: in Italia risiedono 28.168 cittadini britannici.

Dopo la Brexit diventeranno extra-comunitari. Cosa ne facciamo in caso di no-deal? Tutti espulsi con foglio di via il 30 marzo?

Oppure li facciamo votare alle elezioni comunali come ora?
Un alto esempio banalotto: l'Italia esporta 760 milioni di euro di vino, di cui 300 milioni di prosecco.

In caso di no-deal servono doganieri per le pratiche di esportazione. E chi glielo dice ai trevigiani che devono prendersi un broker a Dover per sdoganare?

A little thread here about potential problems for SME's in a No Deal scenario.

We import some components from the Far East and receive these 5 to 10 times every year. We have to pay import duties and VAT when they arrive, which can cause serious cash flow problems /1
We pay our domestic VAT quarterly in arrears. It also means we have to be able to pay this immediately as soon as the ship docks, otherwise the shipping agent will not release the goods and will charge storage charges. /2
The shipping agent can defer the payment of the upfront VAT, but we are still asked to pay it to the agent upfront, so that doesn't help. We can ask to get a deferment account, a DAN, with HMRC which means the VAT will be paid quarterly, with domestic VAT, so we did that. /3

Another boring #Brexit thread.

1. People are right to observe that the EU does flex its own rules but very often when it does it is invoking emergency measures or articles inside a particular legal framework. That, though, cannot extend to #Brexit.
2. When the UK leaves it will become a third country. Standard third country treatment will apply. That new relationship could evolve to include further customs cooperation but it would have to be part of a formal agreement.
3. What the EU is not going to do is enter any agreement that compromises its own legal order. Any agreement allowing the free(ish) movement of goods would mean that any UK regulatory divergence would have to be supervised and mutually agreed.
