I went to the University of Sussex library today. I found a book on tariffs from 1962. Here's a table comparing tariffs on umbrellas and walking sticks etc.

UK rate ranging from 20% to 42% The * indicates that the notes give detail, but I neglected to photograph this notes page.
It reminded me of this article from the IEA which I have dealt with extensively elsewhere and this particular passage.

Umbrellas with a telescopic shaft or none woulld have attracted that 20-42% tariff. Perhaps the detail put telescopic at the high-end.

The specificity of an entry for an umbrella with a telescopic shaft in the EU's CET is not down to the EU. It's part of the World Customs Organisation's 6 digits classification system known as the Harmonised System. Here's the relevant page. wcoomd.org/-/media/wco/pu…
