Zionism is the belief in self determination for Jews in their historic homeland. It in no way implies discrimination against non-Jewish citizens or residents.
(And, indeed, the Declaration of Independence of Israel promises to “foster the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants”
and promises to “ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex” and to “guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture”, and to “safeguard the Holy Places of all religions.”
Zionism is not racist. Zionism is not anti-Muslim, anti-Arab or anti-Palestinian. It does represent the belief that the Jewish people should have a place in their historic homeland where they are in control of their own destiny.
All people who use the word, both those who say they are Zionists, and those who say they are not Zionists or anti-Zionists, should have a clear understanding of what the word means and doesn’t mean.
Agreement or disagreement with policies of Israel does not make one Zionist or anti-Zionist. Supporting equality in Israel is not anti-Zionist. Supporting a Palestinian state is not anti-Zionist. Nor is opposing occupation. Zionism is not hawkish or dovish, leftwing or rightwing.
