1891 census tidbits

"In Hindustan, at birth a male has a life expectation of 25 years, and a female of 26, against 41.35 and 44.62 in England"

Literacy in 1891
8.7% for men, 0.4% for women!

1931 - this had improved hugely for women
15% for men, 3% for women (8 fold increase)
Urbanization in 1891 -

Only 9.5% lived in "towns" with 5000+ inhabitants
4.8% lived in towns with 20000+ inhabitants

The figure corresponding to 4.8% in England in that year was 53%
Now these numbers can give each of us a good sense of how fortunate or unfortunate our families were back in 1891 and 1931...

(Contd..)
1891 : All 8 of my great great grandfathers were literate and part of that 8.6%.

However at least a majority of my 8 great great grandmothers were NOT part of the 0.4%

1931 - 7 out of 8 great-grand parents were literate - i.e part of 15% and 3%
In terms of urbanization

1891 : Most likely some 8 out of 16 great-great grandparents were in towns of 5000+ and part of the 9.6%

1931 : All 8 great grand parents were in large towns of 20K+ population
