There are few things Putin desires more than the weakening of NATO, the military alliance among the US, Europe and Canada that has deterred Soviet and Russian aggression for 70 years. The US leaving NATO “would be the wildest success Putin could dream of.”
In his resignation letter, Mattis cited his commitment to America’s alliances in an implicit criticism of Trump’s principles. Mattis planned to stay through the next NATO meeting in Feb, but Trump pushed him out before the new year.
