Here’s our guide to what happens if Theresa May's Brexit deal is rejected tonight. The government will have just three parliamentary working days to come back with its next steps. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…
1/ If MPs fails to agree on any further legislation on Brexit, the default position would be a no-deal Brexit. The current law says the UK will leave the EU on 29 March 2019 and Parliament would have to act to stop it. bbc.in/2PsiQ0n
2/ The government could try to bring the deal back for another vote but to do so might need a small change to some part of the deal with the EU. bbc.in/2PsiQ0n
3/ Theresa May could decide that the best way out of the political deadlock is to hold an early general election. Two-thirds of Parliament would have to agree with her to trigger an election. bbc.in/2PsiQ0n
4/ The opposition could call for a formal vote of no confidence in the government, which in turn could also trigger a general election, though not immediately. bbc.in/2PsiQ0n
5/5 The government could choose to have another referendum to ask the voters about a deal, but that could take 22 weeks to organise and require an extension to Article 50. bbc.in/2PsiQ0n
These graphics only cover the most likely scenarios. For those asking why revoking Article 50 isn't among them: currently the most likely path to the UK revoking Article 50 is via a majority voting to remain in the EU in a new referendum - see number five above.
