To be frank, it was a very frustrating committee. It was pretty obvious the reason many chose to serve on Financial Services was to serve Wall Street and get increased campaign contributions from big banks. I hope today is the beginning of a brand new day. opensecrets.org/cong-cmtes/ove…
I'll never forget, after a meeting with GOP staff on the financial services committee one day, I said I had to work with my boss on a statement & questions for an upcoming hearing. They laughed & said "You're so funny! Banking lobbyists write all of our statements & bills for us"
At a financial services committee hearing, I recall giving a member from our side of the aisle a letter against usurious credit card interest rates. His staffer told him: "That's from the consumer groups. Don't listen to them. They don't know what they're talking about." Really

1) The draft House rules on “PAYGO” & a super majority on taxes are designed to set up roadblocks against:
- #MedicareForAll
- #GreenNewDeal
- #CollegeForAll
- Universal Childcare
- Paid Family and Medical Leave
- A Job Guarantee
- #HousingForAll

2) There’s nothing “progressive” about these rules & they should be scrapped. If PAYGO and super majority tax rules were in place in the House in the 1930s and the 1960s, it would have made it nearly impossible to pass FDR’s New Deal and Medicare. cbpp.org/federal-budget…
3) They should be replaced with a rule requiring a three-fifths majority vote on any bill to cut Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. That would be progressive.

The $15 per hour minimum wage that our mayor vetoed is precisely the sort of more systemic solution that would allow Black families in redlined communities earn enough so that kids don’t have to live off of cleaning windshields. That’s the reason for raising the minimum wage!
While I think elements of the Squeegee Corps have merit, we as a city still have not confronted our real issues of hypersegregation, deep poverty/no universal basic income, unaffordable housing/high evictions, toxic lead, and a dearth of living wage jobs in the Black 🦋.
Everything we activists have pushed for is what Black youth/families need:

-Affordable Housing Trust Fund (United Workers/BHR)
-Housing First (BmoreBloc’s Tent City)
-$15/hr. minimum wage (unions)
-Racially equitable schools (BMORE Caucus)
-Equity in Port Covington (PORT3)

On September 17, 2010, President Obama announced the appointment of Sen. Warren as Assistant to the President and Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to set up the new agency.
