Lesson from history: in 2009 Gordon Brown went ahead with a peerage for Michael Martin (forced out over handling of expenses scandal) despite the House of Lords Appointments Commission raising concerns it could damage the reputation of Lords.

Last year May sought to end the culture of guaranteed honours, saying that she would “operate on the basis that there is no automatic entitlement to a peerage for any holder of high office in public life”.
The extraordinary, bitter, often-sweary response to this story (from both supporters and opponents) demonstrates what a deeply divisive, highly-political figure Bercow has become.

So where are we on letters? Of the 48 needed to trigger a vote of no confidence, 25 have gone public so far.. Senior Brexiteers tell The Times they have "firm pledges" from 50+ MPs to submit letters by this evening, with a vote triggered within two days.
The Sun says they are stuck on 42. A senior Brexiteer tells Sky News they are on 46. Crispin Blunt tells The Guardian he "would expect" the target to be hit today.
One backbencher told the "Graham better have a letter-opener with him when he returns to his desk in London." The Daily Mail says the "coup is faltering".

Our EU membership is due to end on March 2019. Calling for 'no deal' preparations to kick in immediately as if anything signficant can be done to mitigage the worse consequences is misguided. It's far too late now.
Planning for 'no deal' would've meant implementing Charlie Elphicke's proposals in “Ready on Day 1”, inc/ investment in the road network approaching Dover, widening the M20, building the new Lower Thames crossing & giving the green light to the cancelled lorry park off the M20
Consider the barriers we face in getting a new railway, road or runway built, and think about whether we’re ready to deal with a total breakdown in trade relations with the EU or can be prepared by March.

Come on now.
