There's so much going on, but I'm still thinking about the teachers in LA, and how ppl who haven't spent time in a classroom can have a difficult time *really* understanding how difficult it is to teach a class of more than 40 students. A task many of these educators have to do.
Teaching a large class of K-12 students isn't like teaching a college seminar. There's a specific type of psychological labor it takes to be able to teach a lesson, while managing behavior, while attending to specific students instructional needs, all in a limited amount of time.
One reason I think that K-12 teachers don't get the respect they deserve is bc while most ppl know teaching is an important job, it can be difficult for those who haven't experienced it to fully grasp how much intellectual & emotional work it demands on a minute-by-minute basis.
Being a high school English teacher was the best & hardest job I've ever had. I had classes as large as 37 & one as small as 12. The level of attention I was able to give each student was completely transformed with smaller classes. And their level of achievement transformed too.
I understand the limitations of resources, and that the size of every class can't be cut in a third or even cut in half, but it's important to note that when teachers ask for smaller class sizes, it's bc they know, more than anything, it's better for their students. Full stop.
