We knew Trump was objectively bad from the start and he has only gotten worse while in office, but we're subjected to a steady drip of damaging stories, including stuff we knew years ago, with a deadening effect on the public's interest.
Trump should've been removed from office and had his life destroyed over any number of things. The sum total of what he's gotten away with is maddening and perhaps too absurd for some to believe. But the drip approach is purposefully numbing.
Trump's shamelessness lets him to get away with so much. Every wrongdoing gets bogged down in scoops, denials, admissions, lies, counter accusations, and character assassination until it blurs and becomes old news. Enumerating it all is difficult.
The media simply doesn't have the attention span to handle Trump, and they're flummoxed by his sheer indifference to scandal after scandal, protected by the GOP as he is. People hate him, but they despair of getting rid of him. "Nothing matters."
The media loves Trump, of course. He's a source of endless scoops. Some journalists admire him. "Here is a creature the establishment can't tame!" That he's a fascist, well, never mind, never mind.
The media are so enamored they can't even take Trump's attacks on them seriously, but his ire is directed at liberal journalists, so who cares, right? Trump is a media creation, fake and hollow to his core. He thrives on the attention. He needs them, they think.
In a saner world, Trump was a joke, a parody of a businessman. (He got away with a lot because of that, too.) But the media made him a monster by repeating his bullshit with only the mildest, most inoffensive criticism, the words "lie" and "racist" nowhere to be found.
When you're a rich white male Republican with other rich white male Republicans vouching for you to rich white male journalists, you can get away with anything. Trump's enemies are their enemies: women, PoC, the "establishment." He's just more vulgar.
So the political spectrum warps around Trump's reality distortion field because white men want him to succeed, or at least, they don't feel threatened by him like we do. "Nothing matters."
