THREAD: Several people asked me about James Safechuck. As you noticed, I wrote less about him than Wade Robson. The simple reason is that Safechuck's allegations have never got as far in the court system as Robson's, so we have a lot less material about him.
For example, unlike with Robson, we do not have depositions regarding him. But we have his complaint, his declaration and I have a lot to say about him. I am currently working on an article which may take a few weeks, depending on my work load otherwise. But it is coming.
Until then I take the approach of dropping bits of information about him in this thread. Let's start with what he claims about why he did not come out earlier with his allegations.
Represented by the same lawyers as Robson, Safechuck ended up with an eerily similar explanation. Like Robson, he too claims, that up until shortly before he filed his lawsuit he did not realize that he had allegedly been sexually abused as a child:
Isn't it a bit too convenient that we have two grown ass men in this case who just did not realize until shortly before filing their lawsuits that sexual relations between a boy and a man are wrong and abuse?
Safechuck claims that what triggered his realization of abuse was the birth of his son in 2010 and worrying about having “pedophilic urges” about him:
Now let’s compare this to what Robson claimed about his realization process in his own declaration!
If this story makes you a little uncomfortable, you are surely not alone with it. In a blog post on November 24, 2017, Robson wrote this about when he first told his allegations to his wife.
Don't you'all find it a bit too convenient that these two men, having the same lawyers, just happened to have a very similar trigger that, after all these years, eventually made them realize that they had been sexually abused by MJ?
And that on top of the claim that we have 2 adult men in one case, who despite of the public media frenzy in 2005 and very public discussions of how sexual relationships between a child and a man would be wrong, just did not know and did not understand it until recently? Please...
Similarly to the “Spielberg prophecy” in Wade Robson’s complaint, an underlying theme in Safechuck’s complaint is his bitterness about his failed career ambitions. Although it has nothing to do with whether he was sexually abused or not.
In his complaint he vents his frustration about the fact that his career and professional life did not turn out the way he imagined it as a teenager and blames Jackson for it.
From his complaint we learn that he aspired a career in show business. Initially he wanted to be an actor, but he says Jackson talked him out of it.
Then Safechuck aspired to be a movie director. We learn from his complaint that he big dreams for him about making it in the movie industry.
Jackson apparently helped mentoring him for a while. Although Safechuck claims that the alleged abuse had ceased in 1992, when he was 14, he continued to hang out with Jackson. In 1994, so at the age of 16, he accompanied MJ and his wife, Lisa-Marie Presley on a trip to Hungary.
He claims in his lawsuit that he was an “intern/shadow director” on a promotional video that Jackson made there for his HIStory album. Safechuck’s mother was there as well, as almost always whenever James traveled with Jackson.
According to his own complaint, in 1995, at the age of 17, Safechuck participated in the making of Jacksons "Earth Song" video as an "intern/shadow director" and a wardrobe double for Jackson.
BTW, notice how here he claims his relationship with MJ never changed even as he got older. While elsewhere in his complaint he tries to create the impression that once he reached puberty their relationship "tapered off".
Safechuck also tried to make it in the music industry: he had a band. However, his show business dreams never materialized and at the age of 25 (so in 2003) he finally gave up and moved on to have a “normal life”.
He remarks that for a long time he believed that Jackson "was sincere about our getting together to make movies or do something together in the entertainment realm - he had always said that I would do great things with him and I never doubted him.”
Safechuck eventually went to community college and became a web developer, but in his complaint he blames it on MJ that he did not manage to get a better education. He claims that MJ talked Safechuck’s parents out of sending him to college and to focus on filmmaking instead.
The bitterness is noticable, as he blames it on MJ that he did not get a higher education.
But this has absolutely nothing to do with sexual abuse. Safechuck attempts to put blame for his parents’ bad decision fully on Jackson and excuses his parents by saying that they did not have a college degree themselves, so they did not know any better.
However, Jackson did not have a college degree either and he was not Safechuck’s parent. He could give them advice, but eventually it was up to Safechuck’s parents to guide him.
Safechuck's failed entertainment dreams and the fact he did not get the education he wish he had, have nothing to do with whether Jackson sexually abused him or not. The fact that Safechuck vents his bitterness in his complaint about Jackson “derailing his education”...
... and not fulfilling his promises to help Safechuck in show business, could be an indication as to what his real issues are with MJ. One cannot sue for failed career dreams, though. However, one can sue if if he makes up tales of alleges childhood sexual abuse.
And I guess with his role in this "documentary" he is finally having the acting career he'd always wanted.
Sorry this is the screen cap I meant here. So: The bitterness is noticable, as he blames it on MJ that he did not get a higher education.
