1/ The #FyreFestival documentaries on both Netflix and Hulu are so good. You MUST watch both. Netflix is a deeper dive into the fraudulent activity of the business and founder. Hulu offers some of that as well but goes deeper into a generations impact on society.
2/ Overall #FyreFestival is a perfect example of everything that’s disgustingly wrong with the tech industry. This goes above and beyond “bro culture.” It’s way deeper than that.
3/ It’s an example of the narcissistic sociopathic nature of many founders that’s celebrated over actual intelligence. If you are a white guy who knows how to play the game, can use the right finance vernacular, and fit into character you can and will win.
4/ On top of that Ja Rule is a complete idiot... he’s disingenuous and comes off as an actor playing a role based on what he’s watched in the movie The Social Network.
5/ As a black person in tech I was disgusted and embarrassed for him and his complete lack of awareness and self-education on how actual business in the tech industry is done.
6/ This also speaks to how black culture is growingly, inauthenticly, being exploited within tech by white guys and people who have no clue yet are seeking some sort of validation for not being cool or popular in high school. 🙄
7/ The problem with this is that when Black Culture has inevitably be co-opted by Tech and we look up and have no ownership stake in the businesses or our own data that is LITERALLY driving the growth on these platforms we will all be pissed.
8/ As growth catalysts of our black culture (and essentially pop culture at this point) Black artists and celebrities need to learn this tech game in its intricacies versus taking on this role as promotional tools and pawns that stroke lame founder egos.
