Clearing up a bit of confusion on the WTO: 164 countries are WTO members. But none of them trade exclusively on WTO terms with all other countries.

That's because they all have free trade deals, trade facilitation arrangements or other deals that give them better-than-WTO terms.
In the UK's case, 99.3% of our total exports of goods and services went to WTO members. But only 16.4% went to WTO members that didn't have better trade arrangements layered on top of WTO.

So practically all our trade is "with WTO members". But very little of it is on WTO terms.
In a no deal Brexit situation, we would lose all our existing trade deals, and would be reliant on WTO terms alone. The only country to do so. A very lonely club indeed!

No Deal Brexit Myths Busted
- No "transition period" under no deal Brexit
- No deal doesn't mean status quo
- No deal *requires* hard Irish border (land or sea)
- 99.3% of UK exports go to WTO members. But only 16.4% of trade occurs without extra trade facilitation arrangements.
- We can't walk away from the EU and pay nothing, not if we want to have a future trade deal with them (money's not for smoothing trade talks, but for what we owe on past and ongoing commitments, such as pensions)
- No such thing as: WTO Brexit, global Brexit, managed no deal
- Even if we crash out of the EU on 29 March 2019 without a deal, that's the beginning of Brexit, not the end. We will still need to replace all our lost relationships. But we will be negotiating with zero leverage (we have nothing, and we've already left).

So the wheels have hit tarmac on one of the key #brexit conundrums:
Everyone is working so hard to find a deal that avoids a hard border in Ireland.. but if they fail, and there is ‘no deal’, then by default, there is a hard border. The @EU_Commission finally spelt that out today
Here is what EU Commission Spokesman @MargSchinas said on the issue - 🎥
The spokesman is drawing the logical conclusion to the argument of those proposing that the #Brexit deal *must* include a ‘backstop’ to avoid a hard border: that if there if there is ‘no deal’, then a hard Irish border is unavoidable.

1) How much of a threat is the Spain/Gibraltar question to the #Brexit summit on Sunday? This issue has the potential to be either a) huge or b) to disappear in to a puff of smoke
2) Spain feels hoodwinked. Gibraltar is of huge national interest (and hurt pride) for many Spaniards. Many at the very least saw an opportunity with #Brexit to gain considerable influence over the Rock
3) At the beginning of #Brexit negotiations Spain was promised that no decisions could be taken over the future of Gibraltar without consultation with Spain which is why throughout the negotiations process, there have been bilateral Spain-U.K. talks in parallel

#brexit seems to be all about feeling over fact and this is especially true of the ReesMogg ERG faction of the Tory right.
I never bought the line that #brexit is about Democracy because most of the Tory right had zero enthusiasm for improving democracy in the UK few of them care about unelected house of lords the unfair FPTP electoral system or transparency on the contrary
Most of the Tory right are interested only in constitutional changes that suit them and if anything strive to be as little democratically accountable as possible.

Take this for example, ditch #EU regulation and replace it in order to reach a trade deal with the US. They will have us for breakfast, forcing further deregulation and acceptance of harmful agri-products. Industry don’t necessarily want it and in services they will squeeze us./2
This; how, what and when? @DavidDavisMP has been Secretary of State for 2 years and hasn’t come up with any substantial and viable proposals, as the technology doesn’t exist. Neither has he strongly engaged with the #EU27 to work this out due to lack of internal HMG agreement. /3

THREAD: Today's events in Westminster - which relate to the process and not the substance of Brexit - do not change the fundamental mess and chaos of Brexit. The UK is heading for a bad Brexit deal but its not a done deal - a lot will happen between now and the Autumn. /1
Its disappointing the so called "Grieve 2" amendment did not pass this afternoon (I,of course, voted for it) but significant that Ministers were forced to climb down and issue a statement acknowledging Parliament's vital role at the end of the process. /2
There are still 5 #Brexit related Bills still to make their way through Parliament which are legally binding and amendable: Customs Bill; Trade Bill; Fisheries Bill; Agriculture Bill; and, Immigration Bill. There will also be a huge number of statutory instruments to pass too. /3
