The digital journalism model is crumbling. Vultures circle one of the largest newspaper chains. And this is all happening under the backdrop of a largely good economy.

This is a crisis. And when the next recession hits, all hell is going to break loose.
This is a disaster on every level, starting with the people losing their jobs and extending to the rest of us, who will lose out on news. The only winners are the powerful, who will get to avoid accountability.
I talked to @JoeStrupp about this, he discusses the industry's decline in his new book. He's enthusiastic about nonprofit journalism, calls it the "big bright spot." Which is true, a lot of great work happening there, but hard to imagine that at scale... mediamatters.org/blog/2019/01/2…
@JoeStrupp This has been a decades-long collapse in newspaper and magazine reporting jobs. And the digital outlets that have been replacing them are now suffering layoffs.

And again, this is in a good economy. Things are going to get so much worse.
But wait, there’s even more bad news. poynter.org/business-work/…
