I would be thrilled if American exceptionalism meant:
America was the only country on Earth where zero people live in poverty -- because we can afford that.
America was the only country on Earth where every person is free to pursue their dreams -- because they have the resources to take a chance without slipping into an abyss.
America set the platinum standard for the quality of life of every citizen: a roof, healthcare, etc. And being the worst-off American still made you the envy of others.
America was the loudest champion of science and the exploration of the frontiers of human knowledge, respecting our quest to see into the unknown.
America welcomed people of any background and loved them (us) all.
And none of this seems impossible.
P.S. The American "land of the free" story seems to have eclipsed our reason to be free in the first place, to find the good life for ourselves.

Freedom shouldn't mean freedom to be racist, profit at the expense of the many, or refuse the existence of facts. Tired of all that.
Winding myself up thinking about it. Also tired of the idea that you should have to "strive in order to survive."

Humanity has fought for eons to get away from that. It is OK to just get the basics handled. Humans won't just slouch toward Gomorrah if we do that.
Left this critical one out. Was thinking of it when I said "science" but it is too important to be anything but explicit.
