More productive (and more accurate) to talk about it as the "EU border problem" because it arises from an EU country butting up against a non-EU country. Put in those terms, it's super-obvious why some kind of hard border would be needed if the rules on both sides are different.

Rebel Tories about to test the classic definition of stupidity again: instead of backing Yvette Cooper's Brexit amendment, they're likely to be mollified by a non-binding fingers-crossed promise by Theresa May that she will make meaningful changes to her deal in the next 2 weeks.
The only wafer-thin silver lining is that the closer we get to no deal, the more the pressure will ratchet up for the rational wing of the Tories to break away to save the UK. So it's going to be gritted teeth and sleepless nights for another 4-6 weeks.
Come early March, we will be close enough to see the bullet down the barrel of the gun we're pointing at our own head. That's when all normal rules of politics go out of the window. Because, no matter what twists and turns Brexit takes, there will never be a majority for no deal.

Only about 10% of all the generic medicines consumed in the UK are actually manufactured here, according to expert testimony from representatives of the pharmaceutical sector to the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee in December 2017.

(Note: the original date of the testimony's pretty much irrelevant, since they also state it would take a decade to build up the UK's domestic production of such medicines.)

Gina Miller's lawyers have stated it could take 7 years before the UK would be ready to trade on WTO terms after a no-deal Brexit. (These are the same lawyers that trounced the Government previously.)

So even though WTO terms are really a disaster (much much worse than portrayed by Brexiters such as members of the ERG) we wouldn't even have that flimsy safety net in place after Brexit Day. We would have nothing whatsoever, a complete trade dead zone.
Meanwhile, Economists for Free Trade, the biggest unicorn farmers in the business, claim there is "nothing to fear". Of course there might be one thing to fear at least: the fact that they're almost certainly wrong.

We can't have a 2nd referendum cos we might lose again so you are about to start a life sentence on devil's Island and don't appeal as though you may be released you run the risk of your existing sentence being confirmed #Brexit

#brexit seems to be all about feeling over fact and this is especially true of the ReesMogg ERG faction of the Tory right.
I never bought the line that #brexit is about Democracy because most of the Tory right had zero enthusiasm for improving democracy in the UK few of them care about unelected house of lords the unfair FPTP electoral system or transparency on the contrary
Most of the Tory right are interested only in constitutional changes that suit them and if anything strive to be as little democratically accountable as possible.

2. A ‘common rulebook for goods’ - the EU could do two things: A) reject as cherry-picking parts of the single market or B) start discussing how much of this is doable under an FTA.
There’s a good chance it would be B, but it will have to be tweaked significantly
