This speaks to general truth - we fear apologising makes us weak- but particular problem for BBC. It’s under constant attack, v often unfairly, but non-apologies do it no good at all. Sorry may be the hardest word, but sometimes it’s also the most helpful. theguardian.com/media/commenti…
Problem is BBC’s uniqueness. We pay for it and see it as voice of the nation, arbiter of facts. That’s why Question Time is held to a higher standard. It’s because people love the BBC that they want it to get things right and take responsibility on the rare occasions it doesn’t.
If a shock-jock on Talk Radio asked an Irish minister why her country didn’t want to re-join UK, there’d be a stir. When longest-serving presenter on Today programme does it, that’s rightly an outrage. BBC is judged differently because it’s ours- and we need it now more than ever
